Modern culture is destroying faith, pope warns

ROME (AFP) – Pope Benedict XVI attacked the Godless character of modern culture as he celebrated mass Sunday in a Roman basilica to mark the opening of a synod of Catholic bishops.

In a sombre homily in which he suggested that Christianity in Europe could become extinct like some Christian communities in history, the pope told more than 250 bishops from around the world that societies which rebelled against God in the past had faced His "punishment".

"If we look at history we are forced to notice the frequent coldness and rebellion of incoherent Christians. Because of this, God, while never shirking in his promise of salvation, often had to turn towards punishment," he said.

Benedict warned that "nations once rich in faith and vocations are losing their own identity under the harmful and destructive influence of a certain modern culture.

"There are those that, having decided that 'God is dead,' declare themselves 'god,' believing themselves to be the only creator of their own fate, the absolute owner of the world," the German-born pope said.

"When men proclaim themselves absolute owners of themselves and the only masters of creation, are they really going to be able to construct a society where freedom, justice and peace reign?

"Is it not more likely -- as demonstrated by news headlines every day -- that the arbitrary rule of power, selfish interests, injustice and exploitation, and violence in all its forms, will extend their grip?" MORE >>

Nobel Prize in literature, the highest accolade for writers, to be announced on Oct. 9

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - The 2008 winner of the Nobel Prize in literature will be presented on Oct. 9, the Swedish Academy said Friday, completing the schedule of this year's Nobel announcements.

The secretive academy is not revealing any hints about its selection for the award, which many consider the highest accolade for writers. British betting firm Ladbrokes gives Italian writer Claudio Magris and Syrian poet Adonis the lowest odds for this year's prize.

The Swedish Academy is always the last of the Nobel Prize institutions to set a date for its prize announcement. The winner is always presented by permanent secretary Horace Engdahl at the academy's 18th century offices in Stockholm's Old Town.

Engdahl sparked debate in literary circles this week by saying that the U.S. is too insular and ignorant to challenge Europe as the center of the literary world.

The global economy might be reeling from the shakeout on Wall Street, but two of the world's richest businessmen are vowing to spend tens of millions of dollars more - not on bolstering their own companies, but in helping the world's poorest. With Congress locked in talks over a mammoth bailout package, Bill Gates and Howard Buffett (Warren's oldest son) announced at the United Nations on Wednesday that their private foundations will plow more than $75 million into helping small farmers in Africa and Latin America to sell their crops as food aid - a move which could potentially overhaul the decades-old - and often criticized - global food aid system.

Under a five-year pilot project called Purchase for Progress, the foundations will help 350,000 or so small farmers in 21 countries, most of them in Africa, to grow food for the U.N.'s World Food Program, the biggest food aid distributor in Africa. Rather than simply buying the farmers' crops outright, much of the money will go to teaching better farming methods, and to helping them store their crops in warehouses, plant higher-yield seeds, and transport their produce to customers. Those are all serious obstacles for poor farmers, many of whom find it almost impossible to eke out more than a bare-bones existence from their plots.

US Navy watches seized ship with Sudan-bound tanks

NAIROBI, Kenya - U.S. helicopters on Monday buzzed a hijacked Ukrainian cargo ship carrying 33 Soviet-designed tanks and other weapons that officials fear could end up in the hands of al-Qaida-linked militants in Somalia if the pirates are allowed to escape.

Thursday's seizure of the MV Faina off Somalia, a failed state seen as a key battleground in the war on terrorism, could bring dangerous effects across the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Piracy has become a lucrative criminal racket in impoverished Somalia, bringing in millions of dollars in ransom.
The pirates aboard the blue-and-white Ukrainian-operated freighter are demanding $20 million to release the ship, its 21 crew members, one of whom has died of an apparent heart attack, and its cargo of T-72 tanks, rifles and ammunition.
The ship, now anchored off Somalia's coast near the central town of Hobyo, apparently was destined for Sudan when armed pirates overtook it, likely from a speedboat, and climbed up the side of the ship.
"We maintain a vigilant watch over the ship and we will remain on station while negotiations between the pirates and the shipping company are going on," Lt. Nathan Christensen, a deputy spokesman for the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, told The Associated Press.

Although the pirates have not been allowed to take anything off the Faina, they have been allowed to resupply, one U.S. official said when asked if those aboard needed anything such as food. The official declined to comment on whether the negotiations between the pirates and the shipping company are being monitored.

China's astronauts brace for space walk

JIUQUAN, China (AFP) - China's three astronauts spent their first day in orbit Friday preparing for a much-anticipated walk outside their craft, as Japan voiced hopes its neighbour had peaceful aims in space.
The voyage of the Shenzhou VII, China's third manned foray into space, has proceeded without a glitch since it blasted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China late Thursday, state media said.
"We feel physically sound," the trio, led by Zhai Zhigang, reported back to ground control after blast-off, Xinhua news agency reported.
At 4:04 am (2004 GMT Thursday) the Shenzhou VII entered into a round orbit around Earth from its initial oval orbit, a complicated manoeuvre which makes it possible for the three to get down to the real business of the journey.

The astronauts spent most of the day assembling and testing the space suit that one of them -- most likely 41-year-old Zhai -- was to put on for an unprecedented walk in space scheduled for Saturday, Xinhua said.

FIFA have fined the Croatian FA following racist abuse from some of their fans during their World Cup qualifier against England.
A disciplinary committee from world football's governing body handed the Croatia Football Federation a fine of 30,000 Swiss Francs (around £15,000) following the behaviour of a section of the crowd during the match in Zagreb on September 10.
England won the match at the Maksimir Stadium 4-1, courtesy of a hat-trick from Theo Walcott and another goal from Wayne Rooney.
During the match, England striker Emile Heskey was subjected to a volley of monkey chants after he received a yellow card for a foul on Croatia captain Niko Kovac (pictured, left, with Heskey).
A statement on FIFA's official website reads: "The Croatian Football Federation was found guilty of a violation of article 58, paragraph 2 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and received a warning regarding its future conduct according to article 13.
"Further infringements of article 58 would lead to more severe sanctions by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
"Racism has no place in football. FIFA is determined to continue broadcasting this message around the globe and deploying all of the means at its disposal to eliminate this form of discrimination."

NASA delays Hubble mission by 5 days

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA is delaying next month's shuttle launch to the Hubble Space Telescope because of problems stemming from Hurricane Ike and replacement parts for the observatory.

Space shuttle Atlantis is now set to blast off late at night on Oct. 14 for the last visit to the orbiting telescope, officials said Wednesday. Liftoff had been scheduled for the wee hours of Oct. 10, technically making this a five-day postponement.

Senior managers will reassess the launch date next week.

Atlantis' seven astronauts, who wrapped up a practice countdown at the launching site Wednesday, lost a week of training because of Hurricane Ike. The hurricane shut down the Johnson Space Center in Houston, which did not reopen until this week.

Extending time of stroke drug treatment OK

LOS ANGELES - Stroke sufferers can still benefit from clot-busting medicine even if they receive it an hour or so beyond the current three-hour window after symptoms start, an important new study suggests. ADVERTISEMENT

The finding could potentially extend treatment to thousands more people each year and prevent many from being left disabled. However, it does not change long-standing advice that stroke victims seek immediate help if they feel sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg.

"Don't wait," said Dr. Larry Goldstein, director of Duke University's stroke center and a spokesman for the American Stroke Association. "If you think you are having symptoms, call 911."

The study by European doctors found that the clot dissolver could safely be given up to 4 1/2 hours after the start of symptoms. Results were published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

N.Korea ousts U.N. monitors, to restart atom bomb plant

VIENNA (Reuters) - North Korea has expelled U.N. monitors from its plutonium-making nuclear plant and plans to start reactivating it next week, rowing back from a 2007 deal to scrap its atomic bomb program, officials said on Wednesday.

The Stalinist state said on Friday it was working to restart the Yongbyon atomic complex it had been dismantling since last November under a disarmament-for-aid agreement with five powers.

Olli Heinonen, the International Atomic Energy Agency's head of non-proliferation safeguards, told a closed meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors that monitors were forced to leave the plutonium facility this week.

"There are no more seals and surveillance equipment in place at the (plutonium) reprocessing facility," IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said, referring to the most proliferation-sensitive installation at Yongbyon.

"(North Korea) further stated that from here on, IAEA inspectors will have no further access to the reprocessing plant," she said, summarizing Heinonen's remarks.

"(North Korea) also informed IAEA inspectors that they plan to introduce nuclear material to the reprocessing plant in one week's time," Fleming told reporters outside the Vienna meeting.

Nuclear analysts have said North Korea would need several months at least to bring the installation back on line.

Diplomats close to the IAEA said the three monitors ousted from positions at the plutonium facility were still observing other parts of the Soviet-designed Yongbyon complex. They said the monitors were forced to remove about 100 seals and 20-25 cameras from the plutonium facility.

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 became available on Tuesday for Windows XP--a week after Yahoo's target launch date and interestingly, a week after Microsoft released its beta update of Windows Live Messenger. Yahoo Messenger 9.0 as dramatic an update of its instant messenger as Windows Live beta is of Windows Live Messenger 8.5, and it introduces some pleasant improvements over version 8.1 that will satisfy Yahoo loyalists. Among them are a redesigned interface with more skins, more space, and the excellent ability to see scaled public images and videos in the chat window.

If you're familiar with the beta version of Yahoo Messenger 9.0, this final build adds more conspicuous spam alerts and the ability to chat with friends directly from their Web site or online profile page. We'll discuss both later on in this review.
